Every deadline has passed. Shopify Plus stores lost checkout.liquid on the Information, Shipping and Payment steps on 13 Aug 2024, and checkout.liquid plus script tags on the Thank you and Order status pages on 28 Aug 2025. Non-Plus stores lost script tags (and Additional Scripts) on the Thank you and Order status pages on 26 Aug 2026, and Shopify upgraded stores that had not done it themselves. If conversions, pixels or a post-purchase offer stopped after 26 Aug 2026, the cause is almost certainly the upgrade, and the fix is web pixels and app blocks, not code in a text field.
Deadline table by plan
| Date | Who | What ended | Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 Aug 2024 | Shopify Plus | checkout.liquid on the Information, Shipping and Payment steps | Checkout extensibility |
| 28 Aug 2025 | Shopify Plus | checkout.liquid and script tags on the Thank you and Order status pages | Checkout extensions, web pixels |
| 30 Jun 2026 | Stores using Shopify Scripts | Shopify Scripts deactivated | Shopify Functions |
| 26 Aug 2026 | Non-Plus (Basic, Grow, Advanced) | Script tags and Additional Scripts on Thank you and Order status pages; stores not upgraded were upgraded automatically | Web pixels (customer events) and app blocks in the checkout editor |
Sources: Shopify developer docs for the 28 Aug 2025 and 26 Aug 2026 dates (its page says the Information, Shipping and Payment steps are “now unsupported” without printing a date; 13 Aug 2024 is the date third-party guides such as a LoyaltyLion help article (no longer online) quote for it), Shopify’s upgrade page for the automatic upgrade, and Shopify’s Scripts page for 30 Jun 2026, all read 29 Sept 2026. Shopify’s help centre says advanced checkout customisation is a Plus-only feature, so checkout.liquid itself was not a non-Plus tool. A third-party agency guide (Flatline Agency, 28 Sept 2026) lists the same 26 Aug 2026 date and describes the effect as tracking breaking while orders keep processing; that description is theirs.
What may have broken, and where to look
| What you notice | Likely cause | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads or Meta conversions fell to zero after late August | Tracking code lived in Additional Scripts and no longer runs | Settings, Customer events: is a web pixel installed for each ad platform? |
| Post-purchase upsell or survey no longer appears | The app was not compatible with the upgraded pages, or its block was not placed | Checkout editor, Thank you page: is the app block added? Ask the app developer for the upgraded version |
| Affiliate or referral conversions missing | Affiliate script was in the old field | The network’s Shopify app or a custom pixel |
| A custom message or banner vanished | Custom code on Thank you page was removed | Recreate it as a block in the editor |
| Discounts or shipping rules changed at checkout (Plus) | A Shopify Script stopped on 30 Jun 2026 | Rebuild as a Shopify Function |
Shopify says the upgrade path is: review the upgrade guide in Settings, Checkout, manage compatible apps and app pixels, replace additional scripts with supported alternatives, then upgrade. After an upgrade, place an order and check the Thank you page, the pixel events and the order status link in the email. The checkout QA checklist covers a full test order, and the Meta tracking guide covers what correct conversion tracking looks like.
Who this touches
Upsell and post-purchase apps live on these pages. If yours stopped, compare it in the upsell app best-of, and see the checkout optimization guide for what to put on the page once it works again. This page did not test which apps are compatible; ask each vendor.
Common questions
Did checkout.liquid ever apply to non-Plus stores?
Shopify’s help centre describes advanced checkout customisation as a Plus feature. What non-Plus stores lost on 26 Aug 2026 was script tags and Additional Scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages.
Can I get the old scripts back?
Shopify’s docs list no way to reinstate them; the replacement is web pixels and blocks. Copy the old script text from the view-only field before rebuilding, if it is still shown.
Method: researched from Shopify’s developer docs and help centre plus one labelled third-party guide, checked 29 Sept 2026. No store was tested. If Shopify changes a date, this page’s update log will say so.
Old apps often leave code in the theme too: find and remove it.
